Parent/Teacher Conferences

Next week, you will receive a parent/teacher conference time schedule. Please mark the time slots that are most convenient for you. With limited space and 25 students, please mark your top 3 choices. Later in the week I will send home a note confirming your time. I look forward to meeting with you and talking about your child’s progress.

Reading Homework

• Your child is in a small group for reading class. This means they may be with someone other than their homeroom teacher. If you have any questions/concerns, please let us know by writing a note in the daily communication folder or calling us 270-328-4830. It is important that their reading bag comes to school every day for us to practice and then they will still need practice every night. Learning how to read is a slow process, but it is important that you work with your child nightly to help learn this skill.

Weekly Homework

• Every Friday your child will need to turn in 2 homework sheets for the week. If you want to turn this in early, you can but it has to be turned in by Friday. We have had several students not turn in this work. After 3 missed assignments in a month, the child will receive an after school detention.

Please help us teach your child that school work is important. If you make homework and school a priority, your child will benefit. Homework is not a punishment; it is reinforcement and practice of skills they have learned in class.

Fall on the Farm Field Trip

We had an amazing day at Fall on the Farm. The weather was wonderful and the students had an amazing time. We were proud of their behavior and hope they learned a lot!!

What We Are Learning
We have spent all week learning the letter Gg as well as reviewed the days of the week and the months.  We have also been working on AB patterns, same and different, as well as writing numbers correctly.  Ask your child what sounds the letter L , O, and G make, how many letters are in the alphabet, and how many vowels are in the alphabet.  The kids were excited to put the letter sounds together and read their first word (log)!  Next week, we will begin the letter H.

Thank you from the teachers
Thank you for initialing the behavior log every night!  Also, please read the guidelines and suggestions for daily snack.  We are providing a drink every day, but they must bring a snack if you want them to eat.

Sounds
We are working daily on the letter sounds for the 26 letters in the alphabet.  There are numerous songs online that you can have your child visit to help master this skill.  Also, we recommend if your child is having problems with letter sounds to purchase a set of flashcards at Wal-Mart to help practice this EVERY night.  Learning the sounds is the first step in helping them learn how to read.  We work with the students one-on-one each day, but they need a lot of practice.  If you need assistance on how to help your child at home with this skill, please let us know.

Note from Mrs. Beth—Art Class
The 2012 KY Public Service Recognition Week Poster Contest is approaching.  If your child would like to participate, please let me know. What We Are Learning
We have spent all week learning the letter Oo as well as reviewed the days of the week and the months. Ask your child to sing the Days of the Week and dance the Month Macarena. Putting skills to music is a big part of learning in Kindergarten! Also ask your child what sounds the letter L and O make, how many letters are in the alphabet, and how many vowels are in the alphabet.

Upcoming Learning
Next week, we will begin the letter Gg, numbers 3 and 4, same and different, as well as review the letter Ll and Oo. After this week, they will be able to spell their first word! LOG

Thank you for initialing the behavior log every night! Also, please read the guidelines and suggestions for daily snack. We are providing a drink every day, but they must bring a snack if you want them to eat.

Names
We are now in the fourth week of Kindergarten. Most students are able to write their name, but we are focusing on names being written correctly using the lined paper. Please continue to practice this at home. Proper letter formation learned this year will be the building blocks to their handwriting for the rest of their lives.

If you need assistance on how to help your child at home with this skill, please let us know.

Cafeteria Behavior
As a school, we are focusing on cafeteria behavior. We have told your child to make sure to get what they need (ketchup, fork, napkins, etc) as well as extra food as they go through the line the first time. If they need something, they are to raise their hand and a cafeteria monitor will help them. Getting up out of their seat and playing with food will not be tolerated. This is to keep all students safe. Please talk to your child and remind them of how you would want them to behave in a restaurant.

Fundraiser
Orders and money are due at the end of the month.

What We Are Learning

We have been working hard learning our colors and shapes, classroom and school rules, ABC’s, and gluing/scissor skills, as well as writing our name!  Please ask your child about some of these skills and reinforce good behavior each day.  The first few weeks of Kindergarten can be challenging because it is a huge transition from preschool, but if they learn the correct way to behave learning and success will follow.

Upcoming Learning
Next week, we will begin the letter Ll, will continue with shapes, colors, and will begin reviewing numbers

Thank You
We have had some amazing parent volunteers this week helping out with letter sounds, copies, and just visiting with our friends.  Thank you so much for helping us.  Spending time on your child’s education will help them realize you value and expect them to succeed.  Ask your child what makes him/her special and inquire ways to help make each day a success.

Reminders

1.     Initial the behavior log EVERY NIGHT

2.    Send a snack with your child EVERY DAY if you want them to eat

3.    Send $1.50 on Friday’s if you want your child to eat PTO’s snack break

First Week

A big thank you goes out to all of our parents for taking the time to join us for Back to School Night and the First Day of School!  It has been a wonderful first three days in Kindergarten and Mrs. Oldham and I are excited about our kids.  We have been working in class for the kids to write their name on primary paper and have been spending time going over school rules and learning colors.  Please talk to your child about the rules they have learned.  It sometimes takes a few days for Kindergarten students to get into a routine, so please continue early bedtimes!

Reminders:
1.  Please pay $3.00 for a primary journal and $5.00 for Time for Kids Weekly Newspaper

2.  Please initial the behavior log every night

3.  Remember to pack a snack for your child every day.  It helps out greatly if their snack is labeled!

We look forward to working with you and your child this school year.  Please let us know if you have any questions!
